Nanci Griffith

Nanci Griffith (July 6, 1953 – August 13, 2021) was born in Seguin, TX and grew up listening to jazz, folk, and country music. The combination of these influences led to Griffith’s unique “folkbilly” style. She began performing in Austin in the 1970s and was performing other’s songs while working on her songwriting. Her break came in 1985, when she appeared on the TV program Austin City Limits; she then moved to Nashville and signed with MCA. She won a GRAMMY award for Best Contemporary Folk Album for her 1993 recording Other Voices, Other Rooms.
